Birdwatching in West Wales
West Wales is probably most famous for its flourishing population of
Red Kites, one or two of which can be seen gliding silently above the
farm. There are several unusual birds around Blaencwmcoy. Click
here
for a list of some that you may see
during your stay. We can direct you to some good places for birdwatching.
At Tregaron, the Red Kite Centre has plenty of information about Red Kites There are Kite feeding stations within a short drive of
Y Beudy Holiday Cottage at
Nant Yr Arian and
slightly further afield at
Gigrin. At both locations you can watch large numbers of
kites coming into feed at set times in the afternoon. Well worth a
visit.
There are several RSPB reserves close by including
Cors Caron, near Tregaron, where you can see Kites feeding during the
winter, a beautiful little reserve at Dinas and at
Ynys-Hir,
to the north of Aberystwyth in the Dyfi estuary.
The
National Wetland Centre Wales
is south of Carmarthen near Llanelli -
a good opportunity to see a wide range of wetland birds at different
times of the year.
The Cardigan Bay Heritage Coastline and
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park are a short drive away. The tiny
island of Skomer
is well worth a visit in early summer to see the Puffins nesting, as
well as the abundant sea life surrounding the island.
